What is climate change?

...Okay, so that video might not have been quite accurate. In reality, climate change is caused by solar radiation being reflected off of greenhouse gasses (including Carbon Dioxide) that have built up in our atmosphere, redirecting the reflected energy back toward the earth.

That's climate change in a nutshell, but there's a lot more to it than that. If you'd like to learn more, there are lots of great resources available on the web; here are a couple:

  1. The United States Environmental Protection Agency
  2. David Suzuki Foundation

So, what does all that mean for the boreal forest?

Well, here's what the experts predict:

  • Since the boreal forest is the "intermediate" between temperate and tundra, it is more sensitive to climate change. (1)
  • By the year 2100, temperatures in the boreal taiga will rise 40% above average. (2)
  • With this, precipitation, wind, humidity, and cloud patterns will also be altered. (3)
  • Warming will occur primarily in the higher latitudes, i.e. the circumboreal zone. (2,3)
  • Which will therefore cause discontinuations in permafrost. (1,4,5)
