Current Action Plans

There are plans in action designed to prevent and repair damage done to the Boreal Forest. These include:

The Boreal Leadership Council: This Group consists of leading conservation groups, first nations, resource companies and financial institutions.  They work together to form an ongoing plan of action to conserve 50% of the Boreal by implementing a network of connected protected areas of the forest. They also wish to incorporate Aboriginal rights by respecting their ideas and traditional knowledge concerning conservation of their native lands.

The Canadian Boreal Forest Agreement:  The goal of this agreement is to accelerate the implementation of protected areas, as well as plans to protect at risk species specifically the woodland caribou. It also plans to take action against climate change and its effects on the Boreal.

Plan Nord: Developed for the province of Quebec this plan aims to increase protected areas and protect the ecosystem in conjunction with maintaining sufficient development of the land to provide for its residents.

Far North Ontario: This plan concerns the largely undeveloped area of northern Ontario. This area is under high industrial pressure, but this plans goal is to work with first nations groups in order to preserve the land and to support sustainable development.

The Canadian BEACON Project: This group is attempting to shift the views of conservation. As Canada still has a large proportion of undeveloped land it is possible to plan conservation and developmental efforts to prevent damage to the Boreal instead of fixing the problem once it has already been created.
